OTC Hall of Fame Recipients
Paul M. Aagaard - Joined Chevron Oil Field Research Company in 1952 at La Habra, Calif. as a design engineer in the areas of geophysical and wave force instrumentation. From 1959 to 1962 he was in Houston, TX as a liaison between the research organization and Chevron operating units primarily in the area of geophysics and production technology. In 1963 he became supervisor of offshore research at La Habra where he guided research to improve offshore platform design criteria and analysis methods. He retired in 1990 and now spends much of his time enjoying the outdoors in Lake Cascade Idaho.
William R.Cox - Most recently a consultant for ARAMCO in Saudi Arabia, William R. Cox is a graduate of Harvard College, with a degree in Engineering Sciences and Applied Physics. He later received a master's and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois. He spent more than a decade working for Shell before joining the civil engineering faculty at the University of Texas. Cox served as President of TERA Inc., Consulting Engineers before becoming a consultant for McClelland Engineers.
Robert G. Dean - The Emeritus Graduate Research Professor for the University of Florida Gainesville's Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering, as well as various academic positions at the following institutions: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Washington and the University of Delaware. In the late 1980's he was the Director of the Division of Beaches and Shores for the Florida Department of Natural Resources. Dean earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, M.S. in Physical Oceanography from Texas A&M University and a Sc.D. in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Joe Kallaby - Joe Kallaby has extensive experience in marine and structural engineering, focusing mainly on offshore platforms. He has served internationally as a consultant and has written extensively on their design. Several of his papers have become the standard in the industry, permeating both design codes and analysis software. Kallaby received a master of Structural Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley after starting his graduate career at Oklahoma State University. He earned his bachelor's degree from American University of Beirut, Lebanon. He was the architect of the modern earthquake design guidelines, incorporated into the April 1977 API-RP2A. He is the founder and president of Offshore Structures, Inc. (OSI), located in Houston, TX. OSI has devoted the last 15 years to design certification (CVA) becoming a premier provider in this field.
Francis D. Koop, Jr. - Currently a Senior Structural Engineer at T&T Engineering Services, Inc. in Houston, Koop helped to develop the Texas Interstate Sign Bridge Standard, which has been used for 30 years in the state of Texas. His career has consisted mainly of Offshore Oil and Gas Platforms including North Sea and China Projects. He has worked on the Personnel Platform for SPAR Oil and Gas Platforms and the onshore project, foundations for Industrial Buildings and Equipment. He is the holder of three patents and worked on the Structural Model for EXPO 1986 US Space Station.
Carl G. Langner - Retired senior staff engineer for Shell E&P Technology Co., Carl G. Langner graduated from the University of Texas at Austin before earning his master of science degree from Rice University, he then went on for his doctorate in Engineering Mechanics from the University of Florida. He has received the OTC Distinguished Achievement Award, been elected into the National Academy of Engineering and was awarded the Texas Lutheran University Distinguished Alumni Award. Langner is also the author or co-author of 31 patents along with numerous industry papers.
Lee L. Lowery - Lee has been a Professor in the Texas A&M University's Department of Civil Engineering for nearly 30 years. He has served as a Research Engineer at the Texas A&M University Research Foundation and the Texas Transport Institute since the late 1970's. He has also served as a consultant to dozens of companies; he is the President of Texas Measurements, Inc. in College Station and Pile Dynamics, Inc. in Bryan, TX. He is a registered P.E. in the state of Texas. He has written for numerous publications and is involved in several societies including the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society for Quality Control, serves on the Board of Directors for the Deep Foundation Institute. He is the recipient of the Eppright University Professorship for Undergraduate Teaching Excellence, the Zachry Award for Excellence in teaching, the Texas A&M University Association of Former Students Distinguished Teacher Award, as well as numerous other awards and honors.
Charles Lyons - Earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri-Rolla, Charles Lyons went on to receive his master's and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. After serving as an assistant professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Lyons went on to spend the next 30-plus years of his career with Exxon. Conducting offshore production research, performing engineering applications, participating in exploration lease evaluation and acquisition for Central and South America, Lyons also spent his time at Exxon in executive management positions in California managing various aspects of the production including the top executive position over Exxon's upstream business.
Peter Marshall - Is a consultant and proprietor for Moonshine Hill Propriety in Houston, Texas. Prior to this, Marshall spent 32 years designing offshore platforms for Shell. He served as the head of development section, his E&P Deepwater Civil and Marine Tubular joint and fatigue work enabled push into deep water and the North Sea. He also led the initial design team for Bullwinkle, the deepest fixed base platform. He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Florida, and his Ph.D. from Kumamoto University in Japan. Marshall was a Professor of Marine Design and Construction at the University of Newcastle.
Hudson Matlock - Retired from Fugro USA and the Earth Technology Corporation, Hudson Matlock is the recipient of ASCE's James J.R. Croes Medal, the OTC Distinguished Achievement Award, and he was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He received both his bachelor and master degrees from the University of Texas. He served as an instructor and professor, while also conducting research at the University of Texas at Austin for past 35 years.
David Millman - Earning both a bachelor's and master's degree in Ocean Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business, David Millman is currently the vice president of Keating Partners LLC. in Philadelphia, Pa. He has served as the principal engineer on numerous projects over the course of his career.
Lymon C. Reese - Currently serving as the Nasser I Al-Rashid Chair Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin Department of Civil Engineering and Principal at Ensoft, Inc. in Austin, Lymon Reese has been the author or co-author of 158 journal publications, 7 books, and 282 technical reports. He earned both his bachelors of science and masters in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of California. His comprehensive career includes working in academics, military service and the private sector. He received the OTC Distinguished Achievement Award for Individuals and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
Dedication
This volume is dedicated to all of the authors who have contributed to the success of Offshore Technology Conference throughout its long history. Their personal and professional commitment and devotion to document and share their new ideas for concepts, design, construction, installation, and research, through presentations and dissemination in the OTC proceedings, has been the key in accelerating the development of the strategic energy industry.
This dedication also honors the memory of all deceased OTC authors, especially Carl Bender and Joe Wheeler, authors of papers included in this volume. This editor was privileged to have worked with these two gentlemen. We mark their passing with respect for their leadership and gratitude for their important contributions to the offshore industry.
