In Remembrance

 

Kenneth M. Childs, Jr., founder of Childs Engineering Corporation, and prominent member of COPRI's Ports and Harbors Committee, passed away on March, 6, 2005. Kenny, as he liked to be known, had suffered a series of health issues over the past year. He is survived by his wife Gretchen, four children and two grandchildren.

 

Kenny was very active in the Boston area engineering community. He was past president of the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section/ASCE and founded the BSCES Waterways Group. He also served as the national chairman of the American Society of Civil Engineers Ports and Harbors committee. Kenny received the Moffatt Nichol Harbor and Coastal Engineering award in 1999.

 

Kenny was one of the early practitioners in the specialized field of waterfront structures engineering. His early career was spent at Crandall Dry Dock Engineers where he specialized in the design of floating and marine railway dry docks. In 1970, he founded Childs Engineering Corporation.

 

Kenny graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1952. He followed graduation with service as a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force.

 

A memorial service was held at the United Church of Christ in Medfield on March 18, 2005.  Arrangements are under the direction of Roberts-Mitchell Funeral Service in Medfield.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests you remember Kenny with a donation to the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section/ASCE.
